Staff News April 2022

All of our recent staff news from the past few months, including news from our colleagues and associates!

In addition to our collaboration with STRIDE, we are delighted to welcome Dr Louise Dawson to the Studio 3 team in Ireland as a lead practitioner. Dr Dawson’s work on the STRIDE project has been inspirational, and she will make an excellent addition to our team. We also say farewell to staff who have left us in recent months and thank them for all their hard work. We wish them all the best with their future endeavours!

In the training sector, we have seen a return to in-person training in recent months and are looking forward to delivering even more sessions face-to-face. Last month saw the first introduction to the Atlass programme of 2022, with our group focusing on stress reduction, well-being, and reflecting on how supporters can alter their practice to best meet the needs of the individuals in their care. The next course dates for Atlass begin 13th-15th June 2022 and are run over three sessions (one three-day induction and two 2-day follow ups). Find out more information about the course here: https://www.studio3.org/atlass

Our Train the Trainer programme is also underway at the moment, training the next set of Studio 3 trainers to be experts in de-escalation and gentle physical intervention skills. If you are interested in becoming a Studio 3 trainer, more information can be found here: https://www.studio3.org/training-trainers

Poster for upcoming CPD days in 2022

Current Studio 3 trainers will also find this year’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) schedule on our backoffice and on the website. Whilst we will be continuing with online sessions for many of the upcoming CPD days, there will be a refresher physical skills course at our office in Alcester on Friday 24th June. This is already filling up quickly so email Gemma at admin@studio3.org to secure your place!

The next online session will run on Monday 25th April from 3pm – 5pm UK Time with Principal Trainer Steve Allison, and an exclusive LASER session from Gareth Morewood to look forward to on Tuesday 20th September!

Gareth Morewood has been presenting the Low Arousal Supports Educational Resilience (LASER) Programme in-person in Portugal this month for the first time since the pandemic. Gareth is happy to be back out delivering training, and is 'delighted to be meeting many young people, families & staff whilst back in Portugal.' The course continues to run on an online and bespoke basis. To book an online session, visit: https://www.studio3.org/laser-online

In international news, two members of our team are currently providing training in Madrid – Spanish speaking Assistant Psychologist Andrea Rivero Castro and Trainer Paul Burbage. We are also in the process of planning our next International Conference in April 2023, details of which will be released shortly. This will take place in Portugal on the theme of seeing beyond behaviour and learning from the Covid-19 pandemic. To keep up to date with all our events and announcements, make sure you are following us on Twitter (@studioIII), Facebook and LinkedIn!

Dr John McDermott

There have been many exciting developments and events so far this year. Lead practitioner in Scotland and Counselling Psychologist Dr John McDermott presented this month at the 'Power of Positive Relationships for Young People' conference hosted by Red Harbour.

John spoke about supporting relationships for children with additional needs in maintstream schools. This was a thought-provoking day, with input from Elly Chapple of CanDoElla and Charlene Tait from Scottish Autism.

We are also looking forward to speaking with many of you at The Autism Show in Birmingham on the 24th-25th June. We will be at stand A15 with plenty of books for sale, including Professor McDonnell's new book 'Freedom from Restraint and Seclusion: The Studio 3 Approach' – come catch up with us!

Finally, we will be continuing our run of free webinars on a quarterly basis. Next up, Professor McDonnell will be presenting on his new book, and what eradicating restrictive practices really entails for practitioners within the care industry. This webinar will run from 6pm - 8pm UK Time on Monday 23rd May, and is free to attend. There will be an opportunity to ask live questions, and as always will be held on Zoom. We look forward to interacting with more of you over the coming months as we continue to adjust to post-lockdown life!

Stay Safe,

The Studio 3 Team
