Gail Miller, Brodie Paterson and Rick Tucker have published a response to the charter, basically they do not appear to accept the current situation They argue that a ban would be in effect an uncontrolled experiment.
I do respect and understand their views but, however, I think the view that we need to experiment in a controlled scientific way is essentially stalling for time. People are not just existing in a laboratory setting. What level of scientific argument would be required to satisfy these influential people in mental health settings?
I do not feel that time is on our side. Quite frankly how many inquiries and deaths do we need to get the establishment to really change.
The authors also argue as usual that restraint posture is not that influential. They argue that there is little evidence that posture is a cause of death.
This argument is misguided as we only need to demonstrate in my view a 'strong association'. Again, I respect their position but, I believe that this is a political debate not just an academic one.
In conclusion, the argument to me is straightforward politicians can change this situation if people voice their views. So if you agree with the charter please do more. Write to MP's get friends and colleagues to register GET even more active!!!
