I would recommend a paper published in the recent issue of Autism. (Kern et al, 2006) It compares sensory assessment between an ASD sample and matched controls. Didderences were found between the populations. The authors also reported changes in profiles over time except interestingly touch. I think this is a very significant paper and I encourage people to read it.

I have just come back from doing some work in Ghana with children and young people with autism. I was in Nkoranza whcih is in the middle of Ghana and one of the most interesting things I observed was the fact that the sensory issues - were not such an issue! The children and YP were outisde most of the time....their days were very consistent in a way that we cannot provide in this country ie the care givers lived with the children on a 24 hr basis. The nosies around were all very natural and predictable. Clothes were worn for many days at a time and there was no fuss about what we would see as cleanliness. all together a very interesting experiecne and though I did some training with the care givers at the home I also learnt a great deal.
