I am now working with two people with ASD in Dublin who are showing both slowness of movements and physically finding it difficult to move from time to time.
This has been described by Martha Leary and Ann Donnellan as movement differences. Quite literally people get 'stuck'.
There is little applied research in this field.
I spoke to Lorna Wing about interventions which was very helpful.
What we are currently doing is increasing activation levels by using exercise for the two individuals and actually consciously attempting to change ritualised sequences.
We are finding quite good results but, I am a little uncomfortable that we are advising staff to change routines and sequences on a fairly regular basis.
This almost flies in the face of ASD If anyone else out there has any thoughts ideas or sources of information please let me know.
