I have to be careful about what I report. At the moment I can state that the panel will consist of academics and practitioners and an independent chair. The methods will selected from a pool of photographs submitted by a variety of accredited organisations. These will be sealed in envelopes in three categories ' disengagement, escort and physical restraint techniques. The panel will randomly select sealed envelopes and apply their criterion. We hope to review at least 20 to 30 techniques as a sample. The scales are based on three constructs safety of both service users and staff. Effectiveness, in the opinion of the panel would it work? Finally, social validity measures will be first assessed by the panel. Finally a separate group of serice users will write their responses independently about the methods selected. The published report should be completed by next Summer.
