Hi there,in need of any help that can help us.My son is soon to be 14, he has severe learning difficulties and autism,he has speech, but not to good on the understanding of most things.Typical traits(if i dare say that, sorry to anyone offended). But we have hormonal issues, aggressive issues,he is a tall lad and very strong.Today for the first time he has refused to go to school, this followed an awful night, after turning his tv of(yes that is all i done, and he knows the sunday routine). If anyone out there can help,i have no idea who could help us with stratagies.Coping with autism in a family is hard enough, but a teenager and autism,is really really hard.
Thanks

Hi Lorrie

The teenage years can by and large be the most difficult time for a young person with autism and their family. My experience is that it is a time to re evaluate the way you manage their behaviour. Their fuse is much shorter than in was before hormones and they are just like any other teeager exerting their independence but with little understanding about what is going on.

It may be that you have to revue and re write the rules (the fewer the better). The studio 3 low arousal approach is what got us through those hormone years. If you would like to discuss this further send me your e mail by private message

in terms of autism do we only use negative terminology?no you say but the language is about "Impairment" or "deficeit" sorry about the spelling I am dyslexic.I believe the language needs to change.
