Inclusion - Walking the Talk (A Working Conference!)
Brussels, April 3rd and 4th 2008
EASPD, the European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities is hosting an exciting conference taking place on 3rd and 4th April in Brussels.
In Europe we are learning fast that inclusion and the achievement of good ordinary lives by disabled people is not simply a matter of social and fiscal policy or service quality. Inclusion, we think, is essentially a cultural issue: with self-determination, rights and responsibilities, and the very nature of families and communities at its core.
People with disabilities tell us that, for them, loneliness and isolation continue to be at epidemic levels their “biggest disabilityâ€. They say that talk of inclusion means little if it is not translated into feelings of belonging and real lasting relationships.
This Conference provides a dynamic opportunity for participants to spend interactive time with 3 ‘grassroots’ organisations from Canada and the USA who have hard-won experience of addressing self-determination, family leadership, innovative service provision, personalised funding, and making inclusion a reality from local family and community perspectives.
